SUMMERY
chapter 2 of seeing ourselves through technology was entitled filtered reality it focused primarily on how the way we see the world is filtered, both literally and figuratively. the chapter talked about the extensive use of photo filters and their impact in our world today as while as what the chapter refers to as cultural filters which change the way we see the world. this is a very interesting topic (at least to me) and I think the reason it is so interesting is it is not normally talked about especially not in such depth.
key terms
- filter-anything that alters our perception
- cultural filter – experiences and cultural exposer that alter our perception
- technological filters – filters that we use on pictures usually with a cell phone
- filtered reality – the idea that most everything around and in our lives is filtered in some way or another
- defamiliarization- removing emotion and past experiences from a situation, being completely unaffected by personal bias and emotion
making connections
this chapter really connected with me as it points out what I think is a big problem in our society today. we live in a world where so many different methods of filtering exist that, for most thing, it is impossible to tell what is real. this world allows people to live to the entire population of earth about how the look or behave ar what the like and have it be accepted as fact. these filters are also caused by us, we can create a cultural filter of our own through past experiences and emerson in places and groups. everything we do changes the way we think and feel about things. this phenomena is unavoidable as the human brain is constantly developing and changing. this us how animals survive and humans create.
